ICANN Rejects Xxx Domain

Faced with pressure and opposition from conservative and anti-pornography organizations, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) voted to reject the proposed Xxx domain extension that would create a virtual “red-light district” on the web.

This latest decision reverses the preliminary approval last June to create an .xxx domain extension for voluntary use by adult industry websites.  It also puts to end a six-year campaign by ICM Registry Inc. of Florida to establish a domain for the adult industry.

Anti-pornography groups argued that the .xxx domain would legitimize adult sites, and many in the adult industry were against the extension because it would be easier for governments to identify and block or filter them out.
