Microsoft, US Gov’t Form Alliance

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), a “Department of Defense combat support agency” will be collaborating to improve Microsoft’s Virtual Earth application for military and non-military purposes.

The application was used last year during Hurricane Katrina last year to direct first responders and various government branches.  Microsoft and the NGA hope to use Virtual Earth for tasks such as  guiding relief efforts for natural disasters, humantiarian and peacekeepring efforts, and national security issues.

Both Microsoft and the NGA did not comment on the potential military uses of the program.  Hmm…I wonder what that means.
