Symantec Sues Microsoft

Now these are interesting news! I remember reading “Symantec CEO says: More people should buy Macs” about 1-2 weeks ago. sym“We think more people ought to buy them.” The “target-rich” environment created by Windows vulnerabilities means that virus writers and hackers have set their sights on Windows PCs, he said.

For me that sounds like they want to get more customers, MAC customers!

So now, 2 weeks later, they sue Microsoft for the following reason: Symantec is angry and alleges that Microsoft improperly used Symantec’s data storage techniques in its own software. Symantec wants compensation, saying the alleged infringement amounts to misappropriation of its trade secrets.

The disagreement is based on Symantec’s Volume Manager software, which allows operating systems to store and handle large amounts of data.

Symantec believes Microsoft has “deliberately and surreptitiously misappropriated” the technology “and thereby convinced the US government to issue patents to Microsoft based on technologies invented by Symantec”.

Microsoft describes the accusation as unfounded and says it has tried unsuccessfully to resolve the issue.

We’ll keep you updated on this, sounds like an interesting story!

Usually I would side with the company taking on Microsoft as you would have to have some pretty strong and at least semi-justified claims before you want to take this giant to court but Symantec are just as money-grabbing and cut throat so I wouldn’t know who to believe here.

Good article though and looking forward to seeing how this pans out 🙂
