30 European businesses and research institutes are working together to create software that would make it possible to regain control of a hijacked plane from a distance.
The system would only be able to be controlled from the ground, and would direct the plane to the nearest airport, whether it liked it or not. Hijackers would essentially be unable to complete their mission as planned.
The project costs 36 million Euros, or 46 million US dollars, of which 19.5 million is being contributed by the European Commission.
According to Der Spiegel, a German magazine, the the first results should be presented in Britian this October.
